A giant snake is on the loose in Longview.

Police in that East Texas city issued an alert on Facebook Saturday night for a 16-foot Burmese python that escaped from a residence in the northwest part of the city.

"Please do not attempt to try to approach or capture the snake," police urged in their statement. "The snake is described as having only one eye and is tan with brown spots."

The National Geographic Society says Burmese pythons are among the largest snakes on Earth, and they feed primarily on small mammals and birds.

"Attacks on handlers, sometimes deadly, are not uncommon," the Geographic says on its website.
