CALDWELL COUNTY — A plane crashed in Caldwell County Monday, and two people were killed, investigators said.

It happened near Lockhart off Highway 183.  Caldwell County Sgt. Paul Cowan said the plane was found near the 3100 block of Homannville Trail, near Lytton Springs.

Texas Department of Public Safety and Caldwell County officials were investigating.

The plane crashed in a field just behind a home.  The pasture was littered with pieces of what used to be a 2006 Piper Malibu Meridian single engine turbo prop plane. It is registered to Riley Kent of New Mexico.

DPS has not identified whether he was on board at the time of the crash, but they say a man and child were found dead.

According to the FAA, the pilot departed Rockport Monday morning for Austin Bergstrom International Airport.

He was even in contact with air traffic control when the plane suddenly took a nose dive. The FAA says there was no distress call.

KVUE News spoke to Gilbert Rendon who was feeding his horses in the pasture where the plane crashed. He said he heard the engine roaring and ducked down to brace himself for the impact.

"We saw it coming out of the fog at the spur of a moment. It was coming sort of sideways with one wing to the ground and one wing facing toward the sky and it was coming down at a nose dive," said Rendon.

The FAA and NTSB were called to the scene to investigate whether the weather was a contributing factor.

Rendon says it was really foggy at the time of the crash.
