HOUSTON -– Police say a driver died after he jumped from a moving vehicle on the Eastex Freeway early Tuesday.
According to officers with the Houston Police Department, the driver’s brother was in the passenger seat and witnessed the whole thing.
It happened shortly before 3 a.m. in the freeway’s northbound lanes near Rankin Road.
According to his brother, the driver was going through marital trouble and jumped out of the car while they traveled home from a party. The brother then slid into the driver’s seat to bring the vehicle to a stop.
Witnesses said the passenger ran to the driver and pulled him out of the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said another driver witnessed at least part of the event.
“He didn’t see the driver jump from the vehicle, but he saw the brother gaining control of the vehicle and bringing it to a stop,” said HPD Sgt. JD Rossman.
The brother was questioned at the scene and then let go.
The freeway remained closed for more than two hours.
