AUSTIN -- A construction worker in his early 30s has critical injuries after being pinned by an elevator in downtown Austin.

Austin-Travis County EMS officials say it happened at 302 Congress Avenue on Wednesday morning. The man was working in an elevator shaft on the eighth floor of a building under construction when the elevator was activated. His head was pinned between a slab of concrete and the elevator.

He was freed before Austin firefighters and EMS workers arrived.

The man was taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge with severe head injuries that are life threatening, EMS officials say. They said he was conscious but unable to speak.
