HOUSTON — A medical doctor is accused of trying to poison another doctor she was dating earlier this year, according to court documents.
Dr. Ana Maria Gonzalez-Angulo, 42, is charged with aggravated assault of a family member, court documents state.
According to investigators with the University of Texas at Houston Police Department, Gonzalez-Angulo attempted to poison Dr. George Blumenschein on Jan. 27 by putting ethylene glycol in his coffee while the two were alone together in a home in the 3860 block of Gamercy Street.
The victim said that Gonzalez-Angulo gave him a cup of coffee that she had made for him. When he sipped the coffee, he told her that it tasted sweet to him and that he preferred his coffee black. Gonzalez-Angulo told him that she had put Splenda in it.
The victim drank two cups of the coffee, which he claimed both tasted sweet to him, court documents state. Within four hours, Blumenschein began to experience slurred speech, poor balance and loss of fine motor skills.
Sixteen hours after drinking the coffee, Blumenschein was admitted to the emergency room where it was discovered that he had central nervous system depression, cardiopulmonary complications and renal failure, court documents state.
A toxicology report showed that the amount of ethylene glycol in Blumenschein’s system was enough to cause death in an adult. The report also indicated that ethylene glycol has a sweet taste, which is consistent with what the victim said about the coffee Gonzalez-Angulo made for him.
Both Gonzalez-Angulo and Blumenschein work at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. The hospital issued a statement saying that Gonzalez-Angulo is on paid administrative leave and declined to comment further on the situation.
Gonzales-Angulo’s attorney claims that investigators jumped the gun in the case and should not have filed charges against his client.
“Dr. Gonzalez-Angulo is completely innocent. She is a distinguished citizen and scientist, and these allegations are totally inconsistent with her personal and professional life,” Derek S. Hollingsworth said.
