DALLAS (AP) — The Dallas Morning News has named "the heroes" of Fort Hood its Texan of the Year.
The newspaper says the award includes soldiers on the base, their families and surrounding communities.
It says men, women and children on and off the base have embraced the call to duty and service without looking for personal glory or attention.
The recognition comes less than two months after a shooting spree at one of the nation's largest military posts left 13 dead and 29 wounded. An Army psychiatrist has been charged in the deaths.
But the newspaper says the list of heroes "goes far beyond the casualties and responders involved in the Nov. 5 shooting rampage."
Fort Hood spokesman Christopher Haug says everyone at the post appreciates the recognition.
As part of the selection process, News 8 anchors nominated three individuals for the Texan of the Year honor.
John McCaa picked US Airways hero pilot Capt. Chesley Sullenberger; Gloria Campos named Sgt. Kimberly Munley, one of the Fort Hood heroes; and Shelly Slater nominated local artist Phil Taylor, who paints portraits of fallen soldiers.
