HARRIS COUNTY — A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper shot and killed a suspect Wednesday afternoon outside a northwest Harris County Walmart.
It happened around 3:15 p.m. at 15900 FM 529 near Highway 6 in the Copperfield area.
The trooper said he spotted a man running through the parking lot with a duffel bag and tried to question him. The suspect ignored him and kept walking, so the trooper followed him in his vehicle.
The suspect then allegedly pulled out a gun and pointed it at the trooper. That’s when he was shot, according to investigators.
Vaughn Brown was heading to his car after buying dog food when he heard the commotion.
"It was horrific. I had to cover my ears. It sounded like some loud fireworks," Brown said. "I just saw the man drop in front of the bushes."
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released.
Investigators believe he was trying to break into cars in the parking lot.
The unidentified trooper, a 21-year veteran, was on-duty and was driving a marked SUV.
Texas Rangers and Harris County deputies are investigating. They're looking into whether there's any connection between the suspect and vehicle burglaries at the same Walmart last week.
