BASTROP - Some Texas schools have called off classes due to nearby wildfires.
The Bastrop Independent School District, in a website announcement Tuesday night, says classes and all school-related activities are canceled for the rest of the week. The Austin-area district also called off school Tuesday.
Authorities say the wind-fueled wildfires have destroyed more than 600 homes and burned about 45 square miles in and around Bastrop. At least two people have been killed.
Wildfires in Montgomery County, north of Houston, led the Magnolia ISD to cancel classes Wednesday. Emergency management officials say Magnolia High School has been set up as a shelter. The sheriff's department says emergency personnel believe the fires were about 80 percent contained Wednesday.
