HOUSTON -- Detectives said a 16-year-old boy was shot and killed when a bullet flew into his family’s southwest Houston apartment.

A witness told police someone fired at least two shots at the Happy Village Apartments on Ranchester Drive north of Bellaire Boulevard overnight.

One of the bullets hit the teen in his head while he was in his bedroom.

Nobody saw a car speed off, so it’s not yet known where the bullet came from. One person saw a person walking away northbound from the crime scene, but it wasn't clear if the person was involved in the crime.

In the hours after the shooting, more than a dozen people who go to the teen's church gathered outside the crime scene.

A family friend said the boy and his mother had moved to Houston from Guatemala not long ago.
