HOUSTON -- A Houston woman was killed Sunday afternoon while searching for a set of keys.
She has been identified as 54-year-old Cheryl Jefferson.
The accident happened around 4:15 p.m. near the South Sam Houston Parkway feeder road and Almeda Genoa Road.
"She just finished having dinner with friends. Her friends realized where she threw her keys and they came back in the brush to look for her keys.”
“Cheryl was a very kind hearted person, today she lost her life doing who she really is, helping someone," said Lisa Filer-Miles, the victim's cousin.
Jefferson was riding with her friend and her three small children in her BMW. DPS officers said the friend accidently threw her keys out of the window along with some trash. They were retracing their steps when Jefferson got out of the SUV and was hit.
The driver of the Hyundai had two small children in the SUV with him. He was seen crying minutes after the crash. Witnesses stopped. One witness said a prayer with the family.
“Cheryl was a Godly person," said Lisa Filer-Miles. The driver of the car will not be charged. Officers on scene said the man felt so bad he went to the hospital to donate blood.
As for Jefferson, she just celebrated her 54th birthday. She worked at a nearby Kroger's and at Bush Airport handling baggage claims.
