SOMERVILLE, Texas (AP) -- A sheriff's deputy has been fatally shot while serving a warrant at a home in Central Texas.

The Burleson County Sheriff's Office says Sgt. Adam Sowders died shortly before 6 a.m. Thursday.

A statement from the sheriff's office in Caldwell, about 70 miles northeast of Austin, says suspects are in custody. Sheriff's spokeswoman Christine Labertew had no immediate information on how many people were detained, and she declined to describe the purpose of the warrant.

She says a team of officers "took fire" while entering a residence just outside of Somerville on County Road 278 near 1361. That's when Sowders was shot. Labertew says nobody else was hurt.

Further details weren't immediately released.
