AUSTIN -- Austin firefighters had to go through flames to rescue multiple people trapped in a house after a fire broke out early Monday morning.

Seven individuals were sleeping inside the structure when it caught fire and were all transported to nearby hospitals with injuries.

Four people were taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge, including a pregnant 16 year old and an older man. Both are in critical condition.

Three were taken to Dell Children's Medical Center. A nine-year-old child and 15-year-old taken to Dell are also in critical condition.

At least one patient was taken to Brook Army Medical Center.

Four teenagers were asleep in the two front rooms of the house and two children were asleep in the back room. The back room had no windows or ways to exit the house.

Battalion Chief Palmer Buck with Austin Fire Department said the blaze broke out at 5:15 a.m. on East 14th Street near Alamo Street. Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames.

The fire shut down several blocks of the street to make room for emergency crews.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
