McALLEN, Texas (AP) — A Texas lawmaker who chairs the committee overseeing state police says there will be no hearing to review an incident in which a trooper fired from a helicopter to disable a fleeing pickup, resulting in the deaths of two illegal immigrants hiding in the truck's bed.
Republican Rep. Sid Miller of Stephenville said Friday he considered the issue closely and spoke with Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw. Miller, chairman of the state Committee on Homeland Security and Public Safety, said he found no violations of protocol.
Miller also said he saw no reason to review the policy that allows DPS to shoot at moving vehicles from helicopters.
DPS has said its personnel believed the truck was carrying a drug load Oct. 25 near La Joya.
