HOUSTON— A felony suspect was arrested Wednesday morning after leading Houston police on a short chase and hiding out in a northwest Houston neighborhood.

HPD officers attempted to pull over 19-year-old Luke Bennett for a traffic violation in the 5800 block of Gulf Bank shortly before 9:30 a.m.

He refused to stop and led police on a 10-minute chase, before bailing out of his vehicle near Antoine, just south of the Beltway.

Bennett ran into a neighborhood near Misty River Street.

Officers and K-9 units went door-to-door looking for him. At least one family was asked to leave for their own safety.

"We were sleeping in our room, and the dogs started barking," said Ernilia Garza. "I went outside and the policeman said to get out of my house, he [the suspect] was in my backyard."

Garza and her granddaughter waited in her car until the coast was clear.

Officers found Bennett after knocking down a fence at a nearby house.

When he still refused to surrender, they Tasered and tackled him.

"I heard him screaming," Garza said.

Police confirm Bennett is wanted in connection with at least a dozen armed robberies.

"He wasn’t going to stop until he got arrested," said Officer Orus Baldwin with HPD.

Bennett was laughing as he was hauled away in handcuffs.
