DEL RIO, Texas (AP) — Prosecutors in South Texas say a Mexican Mafia gang member has been sentenced to life in prison for a 2008 slaying and racketeering.

A federal judge in Del Rio on Thursday sentenced 26-year-old Victor Esquivel of Eagle Pass.

A jury last summer convicted Esquivel of several racketeering counts related to violent crimes by the prison-based gang. The case also involves the July 2008 killing of Jose Damian Garza in Hondo.

Prosecutors say the crimes happened in the Eagle Pass, Del Rio and surrounding areas.

Esquivel was sentenced to two consecutive life terms plus 10 years in prison.
