There are few things in modern life worse than standing in the grocery store check out lane and waiting.

It's the reason self check-out lines started popping up, but now there's an iPhone app that makes the process even faster in select Walmart stores.

The "Scan & Go" app is free, and it allows shoppers to skip the step of scanning items one by one and then bagging them up. Instead, you can scan and bag as you go. It is being tested in 200 stores nationwide, including some stores in Dallas.

It is free for iOS devices, and an Android version is coming soon.

Here's how it works: You grab your bags along with your cart as soon as you come in the store. Your phone becomes your bar code scanner. The item and the price show up on the screen.

Once you are ready to check out, you scan your phone at the register, pay, and your groceries are already bagged and ready to go.

The only drawback is the inability to scan produce sold by the pound at this point, and the need for ID checks when purchasing alcohol or tobacco products. But soon, you will be able to weigh produce on your own and scan the receipt from the scale.

"Once you get up here, it's quick, instead of waiting," said Emily Reese, who said she's eager to try out the app.

Dallas is one of the test markets and this option will soon be in 200 stores nationwide. So far, people at one of the test stores say they are looking forward to trying it out.

"I will definitely go download this one now," Aaron Meann said.
