State Fair of Texas officials certainly had the right not to renew Bill Bragg's contract -- that's their prerogative. But for me, it's the way they said goodbye that's troubling.
Eleven years on the job playing the role, taking the picture, without the kind of scandal you see elsewhere these days. To me, that's worth more than an e-mail saying "your services are no longer needed."
Yes, it would take a little courage to sit down and tell Bill Bragg face to face, "We're headed in a different direction." I'm not saying that wouldn't hurt him, though sometimes things just don't work out.
Instead, with one piece of paper Texas charm went from "howdy folks" to how not to let somebody go. I'd like to think that's not how we should do business here...
Protecting the brand, I get... but it's also about respect.
