This weekend we honor our mothers, and I can think of no more appropriate tribute than the public one expressed earlier this week by Oklahoma City pro basketball star Kevin Durant.

"You kept us off the street," he declared, "put clothes on our back, food on the table... When you didn’t eat, you made sure we ate."

That’s a tribute not to a mother, but to a momma... And there is a difference.

You see, any woman who gives birth or adopts can be a mother, even if she does not take care of her child.

But a momma, like Kevin Durant’s and countless other American women, always puts her child’s needs first. And that child is almost always the better for it.

From every occupant of the White House to every inmate on death row, there’s not a man and not a woman who didn’t get here without the assistance -- without the pain of a woman and, almost always, some input of a good momma.

So this weekend, if you’ve forgotten your momma - if she's gotten on your last nerve - think for a moment about the rest of us, whose momma has already passed away. Who would give anything for even five minutes of being chewed out by her for bad behavior.

Anything, just for a chance to say face to face, happy momma’s day.
