DALLAS - A carjacking and home intruder suspect was arrested Monday morning after he was found hiding in a Dumpster behind a gas station, police said.

Police began their search for the suspect after a carjacking that led to a crash in the 2900 block of Centerville Road in Dallas.

The incident began at about 7 a.m. as a woman sat in the passenger seat of a running truck while the driver went inside a 7-11 at Ferguson and Oates roads to get coffee. The victim told police a man jumped into the driver's seat and demanded money, which she refused to hand over.

The man then drove away from the convenience store, continuing to demand money, read a statement from Dallas police. Authorities said a struggle broke out in the truck and the suspect pulled out a weapon. As the victim and suspect continued to struggle, the suspect lost control of the truck, crashing into a pole on Healey Drive and hitting a parked trailer and another pole in a parking lot in the 2900 block of Centerville Road.

The suspect jumped out of the truck and fled the scene on foot, kicking in the door of a nearby residence in the 10500 block of Shiloh Road. Police said the man hit a resident inside over the head and the two men got into a physical altercation.

"When Michael walked in, that's when he hit him," said Gary Ross, the homeowner's father. "They got into a fight. Michael had him down and some way he got loose and went through the house to the back."

The suspect fled the house by jumping through a double-pane glass window.

"He's very lucky," Ross said of his son. "I thank God he wasn't shot."

Police searched for the suspect on ground and by helicopter. He was located around 9:45 a.m. hiding in a Dumpster in the back of a Fina gas station.
