MCCAA UNCUT

Thank goodness Southern Methodist University had the good sense not to follow Duke's lead and nix the idea of a presidential library based on politics.

Richard Nixon graduated third in his class from Duke Law School. Congressman, Vice President, President –– and, ultimately, the nation's only leader to resign.

There was always controversy over his Vietnam policy, particularly among college students and faculty. And, finally, there was the Watergate affair.

The Nixon Library was supposed to be at Duke, but objections over his policies and reputation ended with the library going to, California.

There was much debate at SMU about building this library for this president.

There's no question, Presidents and their supporters hope to shape the lasting image. But the real value of a library is for scholars. The papers and officials documents over time will give us a front row seat into events sand decisions.

Libraries are not about politics; they're about history. And history will ultimately show bringing the library here was the right decision.
