DMN's endorsement of Clinton unexpected; spurs talk

Dallas Morning News endorses Hillary Clinton

The Dallas Morning News has long been considered one of the most conservative newspapers in the country. So its endorsement of Hillary Clinton for president was unexpected.

"Well, thank God we are all going to heaven because hell has frozen over," said former Dallas Mayor Ron Kirk. "I am proud of them. It's taken 70 years to get it."

In its endorsement of Clinton over Republican Donald Trump, the editorial board wrote,"THe plays on fear — exploiting base instincts of xenophobia, racism and misogyny — to bring out the worst in all of us, rather than the best."

"There are a lot of Republicans who are very nervous about Donald Trump and they may see this Dallas Morning News endorsement of Clinton and say, 'Alright, even these guys have seen the light and gone with Clinton,'" said Cal Jillson, a political expert from Southern Methodist University.

Conservative talk show host Debbie Georgatos said the DMN has slowly become more liberal over the years and says she believes its endorsement of Clinton doesn't mean much.

"The bottom line, Texas voters are at their heart and soul conservative and have a conservative love for America and these newspapers are not going to sway them," she said.

Kirk, who served on President Barack Obama's cabinet, doesn't think the endorsement will equal votes either, but said it's significant.

"For the first time in my life, The Dallas Morning News has found one Democrat worthy of endorsing," he said. "So, if nothing else, that gives us a mild celebration. But as President Obama said, 'Don't celebrate. We need to get out and vote.'"

Some political experts say the endorsement does make people stop and think.

"Because when even big conservative organizations say, 'Well, I wouldn't normally do it, but I have to go Clinton because Trump is compromised," Jillson said.

Some experts predict Trump will win Texas by 6-8 points but they do believe Clinton is closing the gap and the DMN's endorsement is a small victory for Democrats.
