Joel Burns, the Fort Worth City Council member who in 2010 revealed that he had been bullied as a gay teenager, announced his resignation at Tuesday night's meeting.
Burns said he plans to attend a public administration program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University starting in July.
"I was excited to accept Harvard's invitation last week," Burns said in a written statement. "But it’s a bittersweet moment, because participating in this program means choosing to step out of my seat here on the City Council and say good-bye to a life-changing experience I never could have imagined when I was first elected in 2007."
Burns will continue to serve District 9 until a special election can be conducted to select his successor.
Burns' emotional bullying revelation in October 2010 focused national attention on the problem of bullying in schools.
