AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Long-serving Republican Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott will have a "major announcement" Sunday, fueling speculation that he will formally kick off his 2014 gubernatorial campaign.

Campaign spokesman Matt Hirsch told The Associated Press on Thursday that the announcement will come this weekend in San Antonio.

He refused to elaborate, but Abbott has long been expected to run. He already has a formidable war chest of nearly $23 million.

Gov. Rick Perry announced Monday he won't seek a fourth full term next year — giving Abbott what a clear road so far to the GOP nomination.

In office since 2002, Abbott is popular among mainstream Republicans and tea party activists. He brags about suing the federal government on Texas' behalf 27 times under President Barack Obama.
