AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Former state Rep. Raul Torres says he is running for state comptroller.

The Corpus Christi Republican said Tuesday that he is tired of insider deals and that he would bring greater transparency to the office responsible for taking in revenues and disbursing them to state agencies.

Torres joins an already crowded field for the Republican nomination that includes Katy Sen. Glenn Hegar, Kerrville Rep. Harvey Hilderbran, and tea party activist Debra Medina.

Incumbent Comptroller Susan Combs announced earlier this year she was retiring from politics.

Torres is a certified public accountant and served one term in the Texas House representing Corpus Christi. He wanted the state to adopt the Lean Six Sigma management system to reduce wasteful spending and shrink government overall.

The Texas primary elections are March 4.
