AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst is praising Gov. Rick Perry for calling lawmakers back into special session to address abortion.
Dewhurst has been taking blame from fellow Republicans for the raucous protests in the Senate chamber that stopped an abortion restrictions bill Tuesday night.
Dewhurst says the bill was derailed by an "angry mob" that came to support a filibuster by Democratic Sen. Wendy Davis. Dewhurst had warned senators they would be called back,
Texas Republicans want to place tough new restrictions on abortion clinics to operate. Abortion rights supporters and opponents agree the bill would likely close most abortion clinics in the state.
The new special session begins July 1.
