WASHINGTON (AP) — Attorneys, business owners and retirees helped President Barack Obama raise more cash than Republican challenger Mitt Romney last month.

New financial reports out this weekend show their contributions went toward the $181 million that Obama raised in September, compared with Romney's $170 million. Obama's fundraising tally is just short of the record $190 million the president pulled in four years ago last month.

Obama's supporters also fueled a $15 million fundraising haul to an independent "super" political committee that's helping the president win a second term by running expensive TV ads.

But Obama has still been outspent on the airwaves, particularly in battleground states important to the election.
