WOLFEBORO, N.H. (AP) — Mitt Romney is being praised by fellow worshippers at a Mormon chapel in New Hampshire for bringing their faith into the public eye.
The first Mormon presidential nominee of a major political party sat in the Wolfeboro Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as members of his congregation took turns offering testimony today.
The first to step up to the podium was J.W. "Bill" Marriott, the chairman of Marriott International, a close Romney friend and campaign donor. He told the gathering the Mormon church is "coming out of obscurity" thanks to Romney's candidacy.
Another worshipper called Romney "a marvelous ambassador of who we are."
Romney has generally shied away from talking about his faith, but he's been saying more about it in recent weeks, and he mentioned it during his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention.
Many Americans have long viewed Mormonism skeptically, and the Salt Lake City-based church has fought for decades for recognition and acceptance.
