WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell says President Barack Obama told congressional leaders that he doesn't need additional authority for any military action to deal with the crisis in Iraq.

Obama met with Republican and Democratic leaders from the House and Senate on Wednesday. The president indicated in the hourlong session that whatever steps he takes, he did not believe it was necessary to seek congressional authority.

The administration is weighing several options, including possible drone airstrikes in Iraq.

McConnell spoke to reporters upon returning to the Capitol. In a statement, the Kentucky Republican said the insurgents in Iraq and Syria represent a grave threat to U.S. interests.
