DOVER, Del. (AP) — An interstate bridge in Delaware that authorities closed because of concerns over stability won't reopen anytime soon.
State Transportation Secretary Shailen Bhatt said in an interview Tuesday that engineers believe the Interstate 495 bridge is stable enough to support itself.
But they're concerned that opening it to traffic could overload the bridge that has four columns that are tilting.
The emergency closure of the bridge created heavier-than-normal traffic conditions Tuesday for motorists on Interstate 95, a major East Coast artery.
