PHILADELPHIA (AP) — FBI agents have spent several hours searching the Philadelphia Sheriff's Office, removing files and other items as part of an undisclosed investigation.

FBI spokeswoman Carrie Adamowski confirms agents searched the office near City Hall. She says she can't comment on the nature of the probe.

The sheriff's office handles real-estate foreclosures, warrants, inmate transportation and courthouse security.

A spokesman for Sheriff Jewell Williams says the investigation relates to Williams' predecessors. Williams has been sheriff since January 2012.

The office has long been scrutinized over the manner in which it handled tens of millions of dollars' worth of sheriff's sales.
