LAS VEGAS (AP) — A man who fatally wounded a concierge clerk at a Las Vegas Strip hotel and killed himself while casino patrons and hotel guests scrambled for the exits was from Illinois, authorities said Monday.

Edward C. Brandt, 31, of Lake Forest, Ill., shot Jessica Corinne Kenny several times with a handgun Friday evening at the Excalibur casino-resort, police and the Clark County coroner said.

Brandt then shot himself in the head. He was pronounced dead where he collapsed in the lobby near the bell desk of the 4,000-room hotel.

Kenny, 30, a vendor at the hotel for the travel website VEGAS.com, died at a Las Vegas hospital a short time later.

Police haven't disclosed a motive for the slaying but say Brandt and Kenny may have had a previous dating relationship.

VEGAS.com Chief Operating Officer Bryan Allison issued a statement calling the killing "tragic and senseless" and offering condolences and prayers to Kenny's family.

A spokeswoman said Monday that the family was preparing for a private funeral and wasn't making public statements. A telephone message left for a Brandt family member wasn't immediately returned.

The shootings happened on a busy weekend night with the National Finals Rodeo and other events in Las Vegas. But authorities say no one else was injured.

The Excalibur is distinctive for its castle-style architecture and colorful high-rise spires. It is named for the mythical sword of King Arthur.
