Trooper: 12 kids hurt in Waxahachie ISD bus accident

WAXAHACHIE — Twelve children were injured in a rollover accident Tuesday morning, according to a trooper at the scene.

The bus, carrying 20 students between the ages of 7 and 18, rolled over on Farm to Market 879 northeast of Waxahachie.

At the scene, Trooper James Colunga reported seven of the children were taken to Children's Medical Center of Dallas and five others were taken to Baylor Medical Center at Waxahachie.

Colunga said one child had a broken arm, but there were no life-threatening injuries. The bus doesn't have seat belts.

"Not being buckled in with a big compartment like that, you can be pretty sure they were tossed around as it flipped on its side," Colunga said.

A Department of Public Safety trooper says the bus driver took his eyes off the road for a split second to check on the kids.
Something was happening behind him. Investigators hope cameras inside the bus will clear up exactly what that distraction was.

Cedric Harrison said he was called to the scene by his daughter, who was on the bus when it rolled over. She told him the bus went around a curb, slipped and flipped over once.

"My little girl called me from her cell phone. She was crying and stuff, but she's going to be okay. She got some glass in her hands and in her head, scratches. She's alright," he said.
