On Friday morning, Darren Douglas Porter was cuffed in the back of a White Settlement police cruiser after officers caught him breaking into an antique shop in the 800 block of S. Cherry Lane.
Soon after, Porter, 41, managed to roll down the rear window and open the car door from the outside. He got behind the wheel and sped away. Just like that, he was gone.
Police found the cruiser in at a west Fort Worth apartment complex soon after, but Porter remained at large. Until Wednesday morning.
White Settlement Police Department spokesman Lt. J.P. Bevering says Porter was arrested at 9:10 a.m. Wednesday morning in the 3300 block of East Belknap Street in Fort Worth without incident. Bevering says they learned of where he was staying following a tip.
Porter is in custody in the city jail on $225,000.
Bevering says the incident triggered an inspection of all city police cruisers. All their back windows, he said, have been disabled.
