Road washed out

FORT WORTH — Engineers are trying to figure out why a flood control project got flooded out on Trinity Boulevard just south of the Bell Helicopter plant.

A chunk of road over Valley View Branch collapsed Saturday night after heavy rain.

Fort Worth city spokesman Bill Begley said it's not clear whether the collapse was caused by construction, or if the construction fell victim to the problem it's designed to fix.

The city began a $4 million project in January to raise the roadway, install larger culverts, and add flood barriers.

This section of Trinity Boulevard floods frequently, prompting several swift water rescues. Two people drowned at the spot in 2000 when flood waters washed their car off the road.

For now, Trinity Boulevard is closed between Bell Spur and Norwood Drive. Traffic is being diverted north to Hurst Boulevard.
