FORT WORTH — The promising possibility that close to 1,000 new jobs could be coming to north Fort Worth is helping spur a spike in the housing market.
This week alone, three companies announced plans to hire or to consider relocating business to the Alliance Corridor area along Interstate 35W.
Real estate agents like Beth Gaskill say it could be hugely beneficial for local home sales, which are already showing signs of a big rebound.
"We're working 16, 18 hours a day just to keep up, " she said.
Gaskill said she is already working with a handful of clients who are connected to the General Electric plant.
GE announced this week around 200 positions would be added to the facility.
Walmart also told the Fort Worth City Council that it is considering leasing a huge 790,000 square foot facility in hopes of bringing in 400 workers over the next few years. It is looking to establish an online fulfillment center.
"I actually think we're underestimating the potential for jobs," said City Council member Dennis Shingleton, whose District 7 covers that area.
He is hopeful even more jobs will be added shortly, and said talks are well under way with Carolina Beverage to bring up to 225 jobs along I-35W.
"It's all trickle-down," Shingleton said. "What happens up here can help everywhere in Fort Worth."
Deals with Carolina and Walmart aren't finalized yet.
In exchange for tax help, the companies would have to meet hiring goals and fill requirements that a certain percentage of the workers live within city limits.
The Council is expected to vote on the incentive proposals next month.
