Burglars shot near business

A Grand Prairie business owner shot two would-be burglars as they attempted to break into his pickup truck Thursday morning, police say.

At about 6:30 a.m. Thursday, shots rang out near the 2300 block of Fort Worth Street, prompting a witness to call 911.

When officers arrived, they found two suspects with gunshot wounds near a burglarized truck. Grand Prairie Police Department spokesman Det. Lyle Gensler said the owner of Xtreme Marine heard the racket and walked outside. After catching them in the act, he fired two shots, wounding the burglars.

They're both receiving treatment Dallas Methodist Hospital and are expected to recover, Gensler said. Grand Prairie is withholding the names of all involved because of the ongoing investigation.

The business owner was not charged, although Gensler said the department forwarded the case to the Tarrant County District Attorney's Office and may be sent to the grand jury.

"I can say with some certainty it appears the shooting was justified at this point but we have turned that portion over" to the D.A., Gensler said.

The two suspects will be jailed after recovering.
