FORT WORTH — Nine employees and four customers at a buybuy BABY store in southwest Fort Worth suffered headaches and vomiting Saturday afternoon. The cause of the mysterious illnesses was under investigation.
The Fort Worth Fire Department said the initial call from the store at 4650 Southwest Loop 820 came at 2:40 p.m. when two people reported symptoms. The scene was cleared and business resumed.
Then, at 3:45, there was another call from the buybuy BABY location, and the number who had fallen ill had risen to 10.
The store was cleared and fans were brought in to clear the air inside the facility.
Fire department spokeswoman Carol Jones said carbon monoxide had been ruled out as the cause of the illnesses. It wasn't a natural gas leak, either.
"We had Atmos come out also to take a look, and apparently they were unable to find anything as well," Jones said.
Neighboring buildings were also checked, but no unusual readings were found there, either.
A total of nine employees and four customers reported feeling sick; some of them were taken to hospitals for further examination.
The store reopened for business on Saturday evening, company spokeswoman Jessica Joyce said in a brief written statement.
The buybuy BABY chain sells baby clothing, furniture and accessories. It is affiliated with Bed Bath and Beyond.
