A Fort Worth man was charged on Thursday with the June murder of a 67-year-old woman he did handiwork for, Arlington police say.

On June 9, Arlington police found Signe Edwards dead in a back room of her home in the 5300 block of Wild West Drive. She had “significant trauma” to her head and face. Shane Lee Dixon, 37, was formally charged with murder on Thursday.

However, investigators were suspicious of Dixon early on. Police say he was regularly hired to maintain her home.

“According to multiple witnesses, (Edwards) was upset that Dixon refused to return a gun that she asked him to get repaired to her and that he had not returned the money she gave him for the repair costs,” writes department spokeswoman Tiara Richard in a release.

On June 17, the Caddo County Sheriff’s Department arrested Dixon for unrelated traffic charges. Arlington detectives made the trip north to interview him. Dixon told them he hadn’t been to Edwards’ home in weeks.

However, a search of his vehicle turned up cell phones and blood evidence. The results of the latter pinned him to the crime, Richard said.

“The blood found in the vehicle was Ms. Edwards’,” she said.

Forensics investigators also pulled a fingerprint from the victim’s bedroom door that matched Dixon’s, she added. The 37-year-old was formally charged on Dec. 12 but had been in custody at the Tarrant County Jail for unlawful possession of a firearm since September.

Edwards’ murder occurred during a six-day span when four people were killed. Prior to that, the city had just one homicide in all of 2013. Leona Swafford, 83, was carjacked and shot to death on June 4. Her killer is still at large, although Richard says detectives are still following leads and tips provided by the public. On June 5, 19-year-old Donsha Hughes was found shot and killed.

Five days later, Edwards was found dead.

On June 11, John Ross Shreves, 27, was found fatally shot inside his car outside the No Frills Grill and Sports Bar. Patrick Jardell Brooks, 27, was charged with his murder.
