Teen falls from SUV
ARLINGTON -- Devastated and heart broken, students headed back to school in Arlington on Monday, mourning the loss of one of their own.
Lelys Leyva-Monreal, 17, died Saturday when she fell out of a moving SUV. Grief counselors are on hand at Arlington High School to help fellow students cope with her death.
Many students say they found out about Leyva-Monreal's death on social media. There are still many questions surrounding the incident, and her family says they hope a police investigation will provide answers.
Witnesses say the teen was in an SUV with four other people just before 3 a.m. when she was hanging out of the window. Her friend tried to grab her as she tumbled out of the SUV, but she fell and was then run over by the same vehicle.
The driver of the SUV took off, while friends stayed to help. The driver was tracked down by police a short while later.
Lelys Leyva-Monreal was pronounced dead at the Medical Center of Arlington.
News 8 spoke with the teen's mother, who is obviously grieving.
"It's frustrating not to know who help her do this, because she know her daughter wouldn't do this on her own," Maria Leyva said.
Leyva says there are many different versions of what happened Saturday morning, so she hopes police will get to the bottom of it.
The Leyva family has also started an account to help pay for funeral expenses.
