HURST – A 51-year-old suspect was killed in an officer-involved shooting Monday night in a Hurst neighborhood.

According to Hurst police, James Dunaway was involved in an earlier domestic dispute and was armed with a handgun when he was shot by police near the intersection of Redbud Drive and Arcadia Street around 7 p.m. Monday.

Assistant Chief Steve Niekamp said an officer tracked Dunaway into a backyard on Redbud. He said once the officer opened fire, another officer soon arrived on scene.

"They handcuffed him. They kept an eye on him. He did start to pass away, at that time. They started CPR and first aid," Niekamp said.

He says it isn't clear if Dunaway aimed or fired the weapon at police prior to the shooting.

One woman who was playing in her front drive with her grandchild said she heard the shots and they ducked for cover.

"I heard several gunshots. It was pow, pow, pow, pow, pow," said the woman, who didn't want to be identified.

Dunaway was transported to a local hospital, where he died.

About four blocks away at The Arts at Park Place apartment complex, officers were scene talking to several residents. It is believed that is where the alleged domestic incident took place.

Hurst police are investigating.
