Body of Grapevine man missing on Colorado hiking trip found

The body of a Grapevine man who went missing during a Colorado hiking trip was found Saturday evening, local authorities confirmed Sunday.

Jeffrey Pickering, 44, had been last seen in the northern part of Chaffee County on Sept. 3. Texas authorities reached out to Colorado officials when Pickering failed to show up for work Sept. 5.

Sixteen agencies took part in a search for Pickering. The search was suspended Saturday night after a body was found. The identity was confirmed Sunday.

Pickering’s cell phone was tracked to Cottonwood Pass in Chaffee County and his vehicle was discovered at the Avalanche Trailhead. His body was found in "heavy brush" near Chaffee County Road 306 and the Avalanche Trailhead.

Foul play is not expected.

A Facebook group titled Find Jeff Pickering later had its name switched to Remembering Jeff Pickering. In a post Saturday night, the group said it was "not holding out hope" after the body was found. The group invited people to share memories of Pickering in a post Sunday.
