ARLINGTON - An Arlington officer fatally shot a man who police said shot into a crowd during a brawl involving more than 20 people early Thursday morning at a bar and grill.
According to an Arlington Police Department report, the officer was patrolling the area near the Saigon Nites Bar & Grill when a security guard flagged him down just after 1 a.m. in the 2400 block of E. Arkansas Ln.
Upon exiting his vehicle, the officer spotted an armed man fire a shot into a crowd, police said. The officer fired back, striking the man who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Howard Humphreys, the security guard who flagged down the officer, said the group of 20 involved in the fight are regulars at the bar.
"They all came in together," he said. "They were all partying together."
Humphreys said the fight erupted while they were seated at tables inside.
"After that, everything just got out of hand," he said.
The bar was packed with people and Humphreys said it was unclear what started the fight. Once the brawl was under way, people ran in every direction, including out through the kitchen, the security guard said.
It has not been revealed how man shots were fired during the brawl. Police interviewed witnesses at the scene as they worked to determine how events unfolded.
The officer has been placed on leave as the Arlington Police Department investigates the incident.
