University Park fire captain found dead; wife, man arrested

2nd arrest made in fire captain's murder

HUNT COUNTY -- The wife of a University Park fire captain and another man have been arrested after her husband was discovered dead Friday evening from a gunshot wound.

Chacey Poynter, 29, was arrested Saturday and remained in the Hunt County Jail Saturday on a charge of conspiring to commit murder for the death of of Robert Poynter. Her bond has been set at $500,000.

A second arrest was made in the case Sunday when Michael Garza, 37, turned himself in. He was booked into the Hunt County Jail on a murder charge, records show.

Poynter, an 18-year-veteran with University Park Fire Department, was found dead in a vehicle in Hunt County on Friday, according to the Royse City Police Department.

Chacey Poynter was seen trying to stop vehicles on FM 35 near Hunt County Rd. 2595 at about 10:40 p.m. She said her husband had been shot. Officers found Poynter dead inside his vehicle from a single gunshot wound.

Officers reported that his wife gave "suspicious and conflicting information." Officers at the scene said they believed there might have been another person at the location ‘at the time of the incident.

In a statement on Saturday, the University City Fire Department wrote Captain Poynter began with the department in 1997 and was promoted to Lieutenant in 2002 and later Captain in 2012.
