An American Airlines jet bound for Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport made an emergency landing in Abilene on Tuesday afternoon, the carrier confirmed.

Flight 1225 took off from Cabo San Lucas, Mexico at 1:45 p.m. CT. An American spokesman said the MD-82 jet experienced a "pressurization issue" along the way and the decision was made to divert the jet to Abilene — about 160 miles short of its destination.

The jet — with 133 passengers and five crew members aboard — landed safely at 4:15 p.m. at Abilene Regional Airport.

Mechanics were inspecting the aircraft to determine if it can continue to fly, or if another plane will be required.
