CARROLLTON — Two fishermen were pulled from a pond in Carrollton on Saturday night in what appears to have been a rescue that went awry.
Carrollton police said they were called to the pond behind the La Hacienda Ranch restaurant at Interstate 35E and Frankford Road around 8:25 p.m.
Witnesses said the two men had been fishing when, according to initial reports, one of them got in the water and was unable to swim to safety. The other tried to save him, but both men drowned.
The victims, both 30 years old, were rushed to hospitals in Carrollton and Lewisville where they were later pronounced dead.
They were identified by Carrollton police as Hector Rodriguez-Ovalle and Francisco Najar. Police said both were residents of Dallas and were related to one another.
They become the second and third drowning victims of the weekend in Denton County. Newman Smith High School student Jaquis Jones, 17, was found dead after jumping into Lewisville Lake early Saturday morning.
