A man drowned in Lewisville Lake Friday evening trying to help another person whose canoe had capsized.

The Little Elm Fire Department said Mark Vasquez, 41, was not wearing a life jacket when he went into the water near Cottonwood Creek Marina to assist the canoeist.

Vasquez, a Little Elm resident, was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a written statement, the Town of Little Elm offered condolences to the family and friends of the victim. "Little Elm Fire Rescue officials continue to emphasize water safety for individuals and groups that venture onto the lake," it said.
