DENTON – Denton police say two armed men are responsible for a pair of related, early-morning robberies of women who were alone in separate apartment complex parking lots this month.
The robberies occurred about a week apart and are exceedingly similar. On October 9 at 11:53 p.m., one suspect approached a woman who was sitting in her car in the parking lot of the Uptown Apartments, located at 2601 W. Oak Street.
He had a handgun and demanded cash. The victim was not hurt, said Denton PD Investigator Keith Smith.
On October 15 at 12:17 a.m., another suspect approached a woman who was also sitting in her vehicle at the Country Place Apartments at 201 Coronado Dr. Like the first robbery, the man had a handgun and demanded the victim’s money. She was also not hurt.
Both suspects are black men between 20 and 25 years old. The suspect in the first robbery stands 6’ tall and has a thin build with short hair. The second is between 5’9’’ and 6’ and has a “heavy-set or thick build” short hair and a “pudgy” face, Smith said.
"We definitely do believe that they are connected and related," Smith said.
Both victims were college-age. The Uptown Apartments are marketed on its website as “the best in Denton student living” and offer four-bedroom floorplans that are popular among young adults enrolled in the University of North Texas and Texas Womens University.
Smith advises residents to be aware of their surroundings and to report any suspicious activity to the Denton Police Department. Both suspects “appear to have been hanging around the complex parking lot” before the robberies, according to a release.
Anyone with information regarding the suspects is asked to call 940.349.8181 or Crime Stoppers at 1.800.388.TIPS. All tips are anonymous.
“These subjects may be loitering, as there are indications that the suspects are merely waiting for an appropriate target/opportunity to commit their crime,” the release says.
