DENTON COUNTY — A stubborn brush fire between Trophy Club and Flower Mound was completely contained by Wednesday afternoon, according to officials at the scene.
Bulldozers cut fire breaks, and crews from more than 30 departments worked those lines with shovels and axes.
Flames still gobbled up trees and dried reeds near the northwestern edge of Grapevine Lake.
Officials said the fire started around 3 p.m. Tuesday. As winds picked up Tuesday night, firefighters grew more concerned about homes in the area.
Trophy Club resident Michael Smith offered to use a construction bulldozer to cut a path between the fire and the homes. He said he and a volunteer dozer operator worked the fire until midnight.
Local restaurants and Walmart brought water and food for fire crews; it was a community effort.
It was also a demonstration of the Texas Intrastate Fire Mutual Aid System. Created by the legislature in 2007, it helps urban fire departments train for wildfires and work with other departments.
