DENTON COUNTY -- A man apparently shot and killed himself near a school in Denton County overnight.

It happened near Cross Oaks Elementary in the 700 block of Liberty in unincorporated Denton County between Sunday night and Monday morning.

The man's body and his car were still on the scene Monday morning. According to Oak Point Police Chief Mike Shackleford, the body was discovered around 7:30 a.m. Monday by a bus driver who noticed the body in a white SUV.

Police say the man, believed to be in his 50's, shot himself once in the head with a small-caliber weapon.

It is unknown why the man drove to the street in front of the Denton ISD elementary school. No students were ever in danger.

The school was placed on lockdown, but classes are still going on as scheduled.
