CARROLLTON — An Irving man has now been charged with the murder of 16-year-old Shania Gray, whose body was discovered Saturday in the Trinity River.

Carrollton police said they believe Franklin Davis, 30, arranged to meet Shania after her Thursday classes at Hebron High School.  He then allegedly drove her to Campion Trails Park in Irving.

"After walking into a secluded area of the park, Davis shot Shania and ultimately left her body in the river," according to a police statement.

The girl was dead within an hour of leaving school, police said.

Investigators said Davis had been facing criminal charges involving Shania from a previous incident. Carrollton police spokesman Jon Stovall said that's what may have brought the two together.

"That's our belief; that's the only thing we have that ties them together, is the fact that there are pending charges or a pending trial in which she's a victim and he's been arrested for a suspect," Stovall said.

Davis — who had been arrested and jailed Friday on unrelated traffic warrants — now faces a capital murder charge. Police said he confessed to the crime hours after Shania's body was discovered.

Shania Ambriehl Gray had last been seen around 4 p.m. Thursday at Hebron High School in the 4200 block of Plano Parkway. Family and friends told police they had no contact with her since then.

Around 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Carrollton police said they were noified that  a body had been recovered in the Trinity River in Irving, and it was believed to be Shania, although formal identification was pending the medical examiner's report.

A bike rider in Sam Houston Trail Park reported seeing the body floating face down in the Elm Fork of the Trinity near the border of Irving, Farmers Branch and Carrollton around 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

The body was recovered by the Irving Fire Department.

Carrollton police said earlier that GPS information placed Shania in Coppell on Belt Line Road between the Trinity River and MacArthur Boulevard on Thursday afternoon.

Shania had recently transferred to Carrollton from the Mesquite school district.
